Environmental Sustainability

Distance Learning is Good for the Environment - Calculations based on these data suggest that the online teaching format results in a total CO2 emissions savings of 100-340 pounds per student enrolled. LEED Certification - FIH operates out of Tampa City Center, a LEED Certified Building: Operations + Maintenance  (LEED EB O+M) was designed to certify the sustainability of ongoing operations in existing commercial buildings. The LEED Certification program was developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) as a means to verify and grade the level of sustainable design and operations achieved by various types of buildings. LEED is short for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

In July 2010, Tampa City Center was awarded a Gold level LEED EB O+M after a year-long process to improve and document the building’s sustainable operations. Tampa City Center is the first multi-tenant building in Tampa to win the prestigious award.

"Tampa City Center’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Tampa City Center serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

Evaluation categories include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, environmental quality and innovation in operations.
